French Foreign Legion IQ test

Writing IQ test in the French Foreign Legion

Today, we’re going to unpack a topic that often gets overlooked when we talk about joining the French Foreign Legion. That’s right, we’re talking about the IQ test or in French, “psychotechniques”. You might not hear about it as often as the physical tests, but it’s just as key to getting through the selection process.

First, let’s clear up something important. The IQ test is not the same as the psychological test. While both are parts of the selection process, they have different goals. The IQ test is looking to measure your thinking skills. It tests your ability to problem solve, your math skills, and your ability to understand and use visual information. In other words, it’s a measure of your Intelligence Quotient or IQ.

The psychological test, on the other hand, is all about who you are as a person. It’s less predictable and harder to prepare for because it’s trying to understand your personality. For this test, you’ll answer a wide range of questions. Some of these might seem personal or strange, like “Have you ever thought about ending your own life?”, “What is your favorite animal?”, or “Do you find it easy to make friends?”. But remember, each question is designed to understand you better.

With that said, let’s dig into five important things you need to know about the IQ test in the French Foreign Legion

1.) Not knowing French is okay

The first thing to remember is that you don’t need to speak or understand French to pass the test. The people running the test understand that many of the candidates don’t speak French. So, don’t let the language barrier hold you back.

2.) It’s an all-or-nothing test

This is a pass-or-fail test. If you don’t pass, you can’t continue with the selection process and have to leave right away. However, you’re allowed to try again after a waiting period, which can be from 6 months to 2 years.

3.) You can and should prepare

The IQ test is made up of different parts, including logical reasoning tests, spatial reasoning tests, and basic math reasoning tests. Fortunately, you can find plenty of free IQ tests online that can help you get familiar with these kinds of questions. Don’t stress too much about your results on these practice tests. They’re just for practice. You can also prepare with the Legion Training App. It’s specifically designed to help people who want to join the French Foreign Legion get ready for the tests.

4.) Your test score can shape your career in the Legion

You might not be thinking about this now, but your score on the IQ test can have a big impact on your future in the Legion. A good score can open up opportunities in specialized roles like being a combat medic, working in communication, or doing office work.

5.) Your score isn’t set in stone

After you’ve joined the Legion, you can try to improve your score by retaking the test. This is a common practice, especially for legionnaires who want to qualify for special training.

In short, the IQ test is a crucial part of the selection process for the French Foreign Legion. It’s not just about getting in, but also about what opportunities might be open to you once you’re in. So, don’t take it lightly. Prepare for it like you would any other test, and you’ll increase your chances of not only joining the Legion but also having a successful career within it.
